New Series Announced! The Parasol Protectorate Abroad ~ Prudence and Imprudence

It's official, Gentle Reader! The announcement has been made. In addition to writing the new YA series, The Finishing School, and shepherding the Soulless manga into existence, I will be writing a new adult series for Orbit called the Parasol Protectorate Abroad. If you've finished Heartless you know who that series will feature! The first one will be called Prudence and the second Imprudence.

For those of you who have been following my blog regularly, this was secret project PPA. I'll begin writing it next year, the first book to appear, hopefully, in 2013 but it could be more like 2014.

The delay is on me, Gentle Reader, for which I apologize. I asked for a bit of a breather. I've been writing 2~3 books a year plus travel and promotion for the past several years. During part of that time I was also teaching and traveling to excavate. I've ended relationships and started new ones. I've moved house, switched careers, had various medical kerfuffles, and commenced a second blog. I've taken tentative steps into self publishing. Mostly, I just need a break. And to take a break now means trickle down effects in the future. I need to balance my future deadlines as well, it was one of the life lessons learned early this year. Now, hopefully, one book will be due in the spring (Finishing School) and one in the winter (PPA). Release dates will depended on how the publishing houses decides to release the books and in what format. I will keep you informed as and when I can.

SPOILER ALERT for Blameless and Heartless
My intention with the Parasol Protectorate Abroad books is to explore the wider ramifications of my Steampunk British Empire, not just how technology has altered but how vampires and werewolves have evolved differently in other parts of the world. I'm not going to tell you too much, as Timeless will give you some set up for this series. But sufficient to say, that the Prudence currently in my head has much of her mother's go-get-em attitude mixed with a bit of her father's temper and a certain love of fashion the result of a particularly colorful upbringing. She and her crack dirigible team lark about performing Leverage-like infiltration and rescue missions at the behest of (but if asked they will deny everything) Queen Victorian and her shadow council. It is going to be so very fun!
Being a writer, of course, all this is subject to change without notice at the whim of the muse.

A reminder I'm running a contest this month to win foreign editions of the Parasol Protectorate books.

Awe, thank you. I promise to take care of myself and still make my deadlines. I'm so pleased you are excited.
That sounds great, I'm looking forward to the new series! ^_^
I love your books. I'm so glad you're writing more stories and I look forward to reading them! The next couple of years are going to be very eventful.
And busy! But I am really excited abotu it. And I have the kind of personality that really like knowing what I have to do, and what's expected of me. Having things planned in advance makes me happy.
What utterly magnificent news! Do please take time to breathe, that sounds like it's been a terribly busy schedule.
I've two more conventions and then I get a bit of a nice break in December. I am very much looking forward to it.
And a wonderful time of year for a break, too, to store up energy and ideas for the new year.
Dear Ms. Carriger, I was hoping at some point you would take your breather and do a little spiritual and emotional recharging for your health. I am so glad you will be doing so.

I'm also very glad for the further adventures of the Tarabotti-Maccon alliance. Miss Prudence's world tours during the sunset years of the Victorian era? I wonder how history will be different from our own in that respect, since the supernatural elements are what's keeping RV's power over the world ...
Oh thank you, both for your kind words as to my heath and the new series.
Oh, Happy Day, you just made my week!
Glad I could be of service!
This is so great! I´m very sad the the pp will be ending next year, but with this, it will be easier. I can´t wait to read your other books.
Hopefully they will make you smile just as much.
*fangirl squeal* you do realize how wonderful you are for going on with the PP universe!! So excited to see how it goes!
I'm lookign forward to it, I love the world and I'm happy to keep playing in it!
I had hoped that my restless sleeping and gnawing on my fists in anticipation would end once Timeless was out...
Now I will never be free from the agony of waiting for your updates. *sigh*

At least, if I have to suffer torture, it is a torture so pleasant.
I do my best!
-squee- I'm so excited!!! And I'm very glad you're taking time for yourself. :)
Thanks, it's doing me good.
Oh, as if I didn't need to move straight on from Blameless when I finish it tonight. I want to know the spoilers!

This has honestly cheered me up immensely after a thoroughly rotten day. Thank you for writing even more stories set in my new favourite world!
Thanks for your enthusiasm. I'm so glad it made your day better.
My oh so eloquent reaction: Eeeeeeee! :)

I'm glad that I have this to look forward to! (Well, unless all those folks who are so obsessed with that 2012 end of the world thing are right.) To be able to see how different the world's history is. (Is there any chance at all, even a teeny tiny bit we might see what vampires in the "wild west" are like? Being a California native I will freely admit I often wonder what a hive in my hometown would've been like....)

But yeah, take a breather. I wonder now if you ever sleep with as much as you do!
It won't be easy to wait but I have no doubt it will be worth it!! :)

Hope you can find the balance b/c if unbalance means less books, I will come be your secretary!! ;) Can't stop the writing...
The new series sounds amazing! I am really looking forward to it, and to all of your other upcoming books as well, of course.

Wonderful news! I love having great things to look forward to. And do take care of your health, mental and otherwise, for I need you to keep writing for many, many more years (how does 110 sound?). Pace yourself!
Lovely news -- congratulations!
I will happily read whenever it comes out :) Take care of you!
Hope Mum & Dad will get a walk on part occasionally, but it sounds like fun - you have a guaranteed sale for one book at least!
Fanastic news! Congratulations to you on the up-coming new series. (Though yes, do enjoy a bit of break, too!)
Your icon - it is all about me. Totally awesome. :)
*wildly waving muppet arms*

This has made my month! Thank you so much! I'm very much looking forward to and dreading the next PP book because it's also the last. However, I now have something to help with that. SO excited! For the new series AND for your most excellent plan for self-care. Something I work on endlessly...

Enjoy your day, my dear. You've certainly made mine brighter!
A few thoughts:

1. I suggest a nap (or five) and some tea. We'll all still be here while you take that much-needed breather!

2. Not just one, but two new series in the Parasol Protectorate universe! And one of them will feature Prudence and bear a similarity to Leverage! Yay! *flails madly amidst shouts of "squee"*

3. I'm looking forward to PPA soooo much, but I still feel a bit anxious about taking the main character out of Europe. (I've gotten into so many discussions/arguments about steampunk and colonialism lately that the idea of Pru defending the British Empire in India sets off my iffy senses. I mean, it totally makes sense given her background and social situation, but...yeah. I'll stop now.)

That being said, I'm sure it will be marvelous and I'm glad I have a whole new set of books to eagerly await!
Good Heavens, I go away for the long weekend and look what happens! Though I can't really complain about coming back to such good news! It is actually making me look forward to the end of the series, so that we can start the new one! It will be so interesting to see Alexia and Conall's daughter all grown up. I hope we get glimpses of her parents and assorted friends and relatives too, no matter how small those glimpses may be.

Thank-you, Miss Gail, for ensuring I will have plenty of steampunk-y goodness in the years to come. I hope you are able to work out a schedule that works well for you and allows you to keep your sanity, health and free time. Small delays in publishing if it keeps you happy and healthy!
Uh, I feel like I should clarify that when I said it makes me look forward to the end of the series, that I was of course already looking forward to Timeless and reading it and seeing how things wrap up (especially after the ending of Heartless!). However, I was also sad about it being the last book (and I still am), but now I'm also hopeful and excited because I know there is more to come!
Of course!
You are so very very welcome!
I wondered how you were managing to keep up with SO. MANY. BOOKS. and conventions, and your life, too.
I will totally miss having the frequency, but as I think many of us are feeling, we are not just Gentle Readers, but Loyal & Passionate and we will be eagerly awaiting your next releases. But, we are thrilled to hear you are taking a breather and taking care of yourself. ♥
Because you bring us happiness and an escape from the monotony, sugar plum.
Awe, thank you for saying such lovely things. Made me smile first thing in the morning, rare indeed!
I would rather you take your time and focus on the quality of your work and your health (mental, physical and emotional). I will wait patiently. There is always fanfiction, speculation, cosplay, &c. to do while we wait.

Also, I had no idea you were still actively doing digs! That is so cool! Rock on.
This sounds particularly brilliant! So excited:)

Though as much as I would love to read it this instant, do take care!
Dear Gail,

I recently picked up your first book to accompany me on my travels to Japan, and I haven't been able to put down the series ever since. I've just completed Timeless, and I am just so overwhelmed by how intensely I feel for your series and the marvelous world you have created. I especially love the equal opportunity-esque spirit of your characters, and the romance of Professor Lyall and Biffy was so unexpected but wonderful that it sent me into paroxysms of delight. I hope to read more of them, and their hopefully happily-ever-after, in the second series!

Alexia is everything I could want in a heroine, and your world of Victorian delicacies and indelicacies is so wonderfully witty and sentimental at the same time. I loved all your characters, and your ideas, and I was sorry to have not been able to put down the books, and to have read the books so fast, because I have nothing to tide me over till the second series comes out.

I am sorry if this is ridiculously formal, but I just feel so humbled and happy to be able to tell you directly how your books made me feel (I love your idea of a blog!). I look forward to more in the Protectorate-universe, and thank you so much for the last week well-spent, and well-spent in the company of most excellent characters, tea, and toe-curlingly pleasing flirtations.
Awe, thank you so much for this outpouring of affection. I can't tell you how good it makes me feel. This is exactly the kind of thing I hope to give my readers, and I'm so delighted the books found a home with you. As to the inclusions of Queer characters, I have a little post about it here: http://gailcarriger.livejournal.com/134641.html
If you are interested.
All the very best,
I've so loved your books. They have provided a much needed- and seldom found- intelligent escapist outlet for me. So many authors writing within your vein fail to create complex characters about whom I want to read. While I cannot help but lament the gap between your books, I applaud your choice to take a break. The expectation of your producing 1-3 novels of quality per year must be stressful. So many authors sacrifice quality over quantity, and I am so glad you are not one of them. Thank you so much, looking forward to your new books :)
Thank you kindly!
